Hole 1

Take a minute to enjoy this elevated view of the Kains Woods and get your round started with this mid-length downhill par 4. A large bunker guards the ideal line down the left side of the fairway. Taking on the bunker will open the green, while a drive down the right will require an approach over the greenside bunker.

The second is a long straight away par 5. Fairway bunkers down the left and a hazard down the right demand a great drive. The ideal lay-up area is guarded by a single bunker on the left hand side. Players attempting to hit this green in two will have to contend with the deep greenside bunker and a pond to the right. Stay short on your approach as shots over the green will require a tricky chip from the back slope.

Don’t let the yardage fool you on this tough little par 4. From the tee you have two options, stay short of the fairway bunkers or give the green a shot. Distance control is premium when hitting into the kidney shaped green with a bunker short and out of bounds long.

Hole 4

One of the prettiest holes on the course, but arguably the toughest. You can take on the fairway bunker to leave a shorter approach or aim left to the widest part of the fairway 175-200 yards out. The second requires a straight shot as the pond right and the bunker left are waiting for errant shots. Walking off this green with a par will set you up for a great day.

Double check the yardage to the pin because any shots landing on the front edge of the green are likely to run off and into a low area in front of the green. The large back to front slope and the mount on the right side make a 2 putt no guarantee on this hole.

Another great driving hole. Deep fairway bunkers down the left and two perfectly positioned bunkers down the right require an accurate tee shot to ensure a short approach. The ideal approach shot will use the back to front, right to left slope to funnel the ball to the middle of the green. Downhill putts on this green will test your distance control.

Tee it high and let it fly on this elevated tee shot to a generous landing area with a fairway bunker short right and long left. Shorter hitters will want to play it down the left hand side of the fairway and let the natural undulations move the ball back into the middle. Flag position dictates the approach shot as the front left portion of the green is open to low running shots while the back right is guarded by a bunker which requires a higher softer shot to get close.

An intimidating shot from any tee with water down the entire right side tee to green. The left hand side may look like the safe option but deep collection areas will leave a tricky up and down for anyone bailing out. A pretty hole where three is a good score any day.

Hole 9

This long wide uphill par 5 may look like a time to grip it and rip it, but positioning is important on all shots. A tee shot down the left and lay-up to the right hand side will avoid all the fairway bunkers and provide the best angle to this large green with a narrow opening and deep faced bunker long and short. Stay below the hole as the green slopes back to front.

Hole 10

The ideal tee shot on this dogleg left par 4 should finish short of the hill 100 yards from the green. The second shot is a slightly elevated approach to a strong back to front green with deep greenside bunkers, short left and long right. Putts from the back of this green can be slick and should be avoided at all costs.

Hole 11

Yet another great driving hole as deep bunkers protect the shortest route to the hole. Don’t bite off more than you can chew as shots from these bunkers will require a pitch back into play. A good drive is rewarded with options, aim right to the wide part of the fairway or take on the fairway bunker left for the best angle to this green. Take a look from both sides as double breakers are common on this green.

Check the wind and the pin location on this sneaky little par 3 over water. A flag in the front may require 3 less clubs than one on the back right. Hit a good shot and you’ll be rewarded, bail out left and you’ll be left with a tough chip shot from the rough to a green which runs away from you.

Hole 13

One of the most intimidating tee shots you will face with water spanning the full length of this dogleg left par 5. The shortest route to the hole hugs the left side and flirts with the water. For all but the longest hitters the sensible play is to wide landing zone right followed by a lay-up right of the 100 yard marker safely on dry land. Getting your lay-up past the 100 yard marker will all but take the water out of play for the approach.

The tee you play and the pin position will dictate how you play this hole. From the back tee you are forced to take on the bunkers short on all but a front left pin position. As you move up tee blocks the green opens up to running approaches. Check the pin placement as this is a very long green and it’s easy to leave yourself a very long putt.

Pick your line from the tee. The long hitters will have the option to carry the pond in line with the bunkers and leave a short approach. Shorter hitters will take a more conservative line over the pond favouring the large landing area right of the fairway bunker from the tee. This elevated green has two distinct tiers that make distance control extremely important, putts going up and down the ridge can be difficult.

Hole 16

Perhaps the most beautiful view in all of London. This mid-length downhill par 5 opens with a tee-shot to wide landing area at the top of the hill. A shorter second is possible for those with the length and guts to hit their tee shot past the fairway bunker on the right. Second shots can be challenging as there are few even lies in this fairway. From the fairway it may look tempting to carry the green front bunker, but the ideal shot favours the right front of the green as the entire surface slopes to the back left.

Cut out of the woods, this long par 3 seems like its own little world. Possibly the most deceiving hole on the course as what appears to be front bunker left is actually positioned well short of the putting surface. Wind can play a factor as the valley and the trees can cause the wind to swirl.

Hole 18

A fitting end to a round at RiverBend with one last exceptional driving hole. This meandering par 4 forces you to pick a line from the tee and hit it. Deep cross and well positioned fairway bunkers will catch any ball that has taken on too much or bailed out right. Take an extra club on the second shot as it plays significantly uphill. If the pin position is back right don’t get greedy as the deep greenside bunker is waiting for any shots that come up short.
